As lawmakers gear up for the legislative session, they get one simple request: use the state’s housing trust fund to actually pay for housing.

Carrie O’Rourke with Florida Realtors says the Sunshine State already has a great program for affordable housing.

“These funds help Floridians of modest means find rental and home ownership opportunities,” she said. “Those could be in the form of affordable housing … affordable apartments, down-payment assistance to purchase a home, or even money to repair a home.”

There will be almost $300 million in the affordable housing trust fund in the next budget, but the governor wants to use most of that money for other projects.

State lawmakers also have a history of raiding the trust fund when money is tight.
