Manatee, Sarasota counties help make Florida third in number of homeless people

The presentation was coordinated by Suncoast Partnership To End Homelessness, the Orange County Office of Mental Health and Homeless Issues Division, and Florida’s Neighborhood Rehabilitation Program.

Sen. Jack Latvala plans to push state for homeless funding in 2014

Every year when their grants expire, homeless aid groups across Florida scramble to apply for new ones, hoping to piece together enough funding keep their doors open.
That “hodgepodge” system of funding nonprofits and homeless shelters is not working, according to state Sen. Jack Latvala, who is planning to propose changes next year. Lawmakers need to create an “organized approach,” he said, and not leave it entirely up to individual counties and cities to decide whether to spend taxpayer money to help the homeless.

More residential support needed for adults with autism

From diagnosis and therapies, to job placement and residential options, parents of autistic children are often faced with difficult decisions. Approximately 80 percent of adults with autism up to 30 years old live at home for one reason – there is not enough affordable housing available, both the physical space and the appropriate supports,” Lisa Goring, vice president of family services at Autism Speaks, said.
